Bobbleheads and a New Camera

Image for Bobbleheads and a New Camera

In a sick, fateful twist of timing (really, is there any other?), my fancy new camera arrived from a New York camera shop just a few days after the Washington Capitals 2011-12 season came to an end last week. After taking the initial mandatory cat photos I was looking around the family room for something to shoot using some fancy new features and I saw the bobblehead set on top of a bookcase. Since I won’t be taking any Capitals photos with this camera for a while, I figured, “Why not?” I think my wife laughed at me a little, but that’s okay. I think the result was worth it.

The bobbleheads pictured (Nicklas Backstrom, Brooks Laich, John Carlson, Mike Green, and Alex Ovechkin) are part of the gift the Washington Capitals gave their season ticket holders for the 2011-12 NHL season. Tomas Vokoun was also included in the set and would normally be standing to Backstrom’s right, but I left him out for two reasons. The photo didn’t look quite right with him there (I tried) and Vokoun is almost certainly not going to be back next year so the photo might have a longer shelf life without him. For more about the bobbleheads, watch the Capitals unboxing video.

The Big Guns Got This

Image for The Big Guns Got This

After the game that wouldn’t end finally ended Thursday morning, I wrote something about an “I got this” vibe from the Washington Capitals. Saturday afternoon’s game validated that feeling. The Caps had it and defeated the New York Rangers by a score of 3-2. Thankfully, it was in regulation time, too.

There are three photos I’m especially happy with from yesterday’s game. One is the feature photo in this post of Nicklas Backstrom’s fist pump following his goal. We don’t get that kind of celly from him very often.

While I couldn’t quite tell how the Alex Ovechkin hit on Dan Girardi went down, but it was one of those rare times that I shot an in-focus, not-too-motion-blurred photo of a moment like that.

Then there is the photo of the sombrero on the ice in front of the Chipotle dasher board ad in front of a fan holding a sign reading “Rangers Are in Danger” with the puck sliding by for some Cinco De Mayo spirit.

There’s plenty to read  and watch elsewhere about the game, like Russian Machine Never Breaks, Ed Frankovic, Japer’s Rink and On Frozen Blog. And check out more of my photos below or on flickr.

Back In It

Image for Back In It

The Washington Capitals were up with a solid lead again last night in their game against the Montreal Canadiens and, once again, they gave up the lead. Fortunately, the Capitals prevailed in the shootout on the strength of goals by Matt Hendricks (despite his “Paralyzer” shootout move doing nothing for him) and Alexander Semin while Michal Neuvrith didn’t let anything by him.

While there were many stories of the game last night like the Capitals blowing another lead, the team scrapping that much closer to getting into the playoffs despite themselves, a continuing powerless play, and it saying “Fan Appreciation Day” on the ticket, the only thing that really seemed to matter (and was a big enough gift back to fans) was the return of Nicklas Backstrom. Well, the playoff thing matter a little bit, too. And that power(less) play could be a real problem if they get there. It was great seeing Backstrom get right back into the groove.

It was also cool to see Semin roughing someone up. I know some up in the press box called it a weak call, and perhaps it was from that view, but from my view (which you can see in one of the photos below), Semin gave some elbow and cared enough to finish with an extra little bit.

Flames Can’t Cool Caps

Image for Flames Can’t Cool Caps

In another solid and tight game, the Washington Capitals extended their win streak to four games and are now 9-0 with Mike Green in the lineup this season after beating the Calgary Flames by a score of 3-1. Alex Ovechkin is scoring like “Is party now.” Everything is groovy.

Except that Nick Backstrom left the game early shortly after taking an elbow to the head. And Alexander Semin may or may not have suffered a deep cut to his right arm on Saturday in Columbus. And the Capitals are heading West to play in San Jose and Los Angeles. At least they win every time they visit those cities. Oh, wait.

Well, let’s see…

Read more about the game with ideas and observations that probably make sense at Japer’s Rink, Russian Machine, Ed Frankovic, District Sports Page, and Kings of Leonsis.

See my photos below or on flickr.

Speaking of my photos… I know some of you check out my photos pretty often, or at least I hope at least a few of you do. For those that do, you may have noticed the look of my photos changing a bit over the past few games. I’ve been making some tweaks to my processing routine. While they still aren’t quite turning out quite like I’d like them to, they’re getting closer.

I was wondering, though, what do you think? Have you noticed? If you have, do you like the changes? Dislike them? Or generally, what do you like about my photos? Or not like? Let me know. I would really like to hear from you.  Thanks!

Chest Bump For the Win

Image for Chest Bump For the Win

With DJ King in the Washington Capitals’ lineup last night against the Ottawa Senators, I’m sure you can imagine how thrilled my seven year old daughter was. 🙂 It was cool having her tell me every time he took the ice for his 6 minutes 58 seconds of ice time. Maybe he can get some more time next time. After all, he was credited with as many shots as Dennis Wideman, Jeff Halpern, Brooks Laich, Mike Knuble, Karl Alzner, and Roman Hamrlik combined and they had a total ice time of 104 minutes 28 seconds. Just sayin’.

It wasn’t the best game the Capitals have ever played, but it was far from the worst since Verizon Center became the place to Rock the Red. Any connection to the not very fancy stats above? I don’t know. Other people may have some opinions on that. People and blogs like The Peerless Prognosticator, Japer’s Rink, Russian Machine, Ed Frankovic, and DC Sports Page. I just take pictures and make odd observations… Like, did anyone else notice the chest bump Alex Ovechkin and Tomas Vokoun shared after the game ended? Is this what replaces the shoulder bump Ovechkin and Nick Backstrom used to do but haven’t done yet this season? Has anyone else noticed this stuff? Anyway, I hope you enjoy my photos below or on flickr. I can’t wait for the new camera (by Thanksgiving, I hope).

Caps Fans Outside the White House

Image for Caps Fans Outside the White House

There was good news and bad news last night. The Washington Capitals lost their second game in a row to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL Eastern Conference Semifinals and dropped to 0-2 in their series. When we got home from the game, we heard the news that American forces had killed Osama Bin Laden and that a crowd was forming at the White House to celebrate. I wiped the memory car, stuck it back in the camera and drove back downtown to see what I could see. I saw a lot of Caps fans (including @cnichols14) and a lot of happy people.

The photos here (and on flickr) are of some of those Capitals fans. There’s also an odd one of a guy (I think) in a Penguins t-shirt with some kind of dragon mask/box on his head.  Also check out Russian Machine Never Breaks and @rinkrebel‘s flickr steam for more Caps fans in the crowd outside the White House. (I’m sure there are others, but I don’t know what or where they are.)

I think I grabbed some other decent shots that have no Caps connection and should be the subject of a follow up post.  I also have plenty of photos from the game, but those are going to wait until later, too.

Another Fight Strap Incident for Alexander Semin?

Image for Another Fight Strap Incident for Alexander Semin?

Yesterday was Fan Appreciation Day at Verizon Center for the Washington Captials. The highlight each year is the “Jersey Off Our Backs” ceremony where each player gives their jersey to selected fans. While the ceremony was taking place last night, it looked like Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin (with or without help from Eric Fehr, Semyon Varlamov, and Nicklas Backstrom) hatched a plan to prank rookie Marcus Johansson. Ovechkin and Backstrom were to distract while Semin attached Johansson’s fight strap to his pants. Just before Semin could finish, Johansson caught him.

A thirty second video of photos from the incident below:

Caps Loss Makes 8 Year Old Girl Cry

Image for Caps Loss Makes 8 Year Old Girl Cry

While all Washington Capitals fans were no doubt disappointed about last night’s 6-0 loss at Verizon Center to the New York Rangers, none may have been as devastated as my eight year old daughter.  When my wife dropped me off at the Metro garage to retrieve my car, my daughter begged to ride home in my car.  It was clear as day just how profoundly affected she had been.

“Why couldn’t they score just one eensy weensy teeny tiny little goal?”  By the time we reached my car, I heard all of these questions, statements and more:

  • “I know they won’t win every game, but just one goal.”
  • “Isn’t that Alex Ovechkin’s job? Or Alex Semin’s?”
  • “Even Nick Backstrom! He didn’t take any face-offs, so he should have been ready to score a goal.”
  • “I mean, come-on!”
  • “Know how bad it was? I wanted you and Mommy to turn the radio off in the car.”
  • “And, Daddy, when was the last time they scored a power play goal at home?”

I. Had. No. Answer.

I reminded her that she had fun.  That the CSN camera guy shot her again during warmups and the kids at school will probably soon fawn all over her again asking how she got to be on TV. I reminded her how she got to ride the zamboni on her birthday last year and was also given a puck during warmups at that game.  I reminded her how she’s been able to meet most of her favorite players, get their autographs, and Backstrom (her favorite) smiled at her.

While at this point in the season, many of us old enough to have children of our own have probably entered a state of resignation that the good old days that ran from Thanksgiving 2007 through the end of the regular season last spring are gone for now, but still hold hope for the post-season knowing that success there will make the regular season of 10/11 worthwhile.

My daughter knows this at some level.  She explained how it’s more important that the Capitals win in the playoffs than any single regular season game. “But the playoffs are hard. If they can’t win now…” her words trailed off. I don’t know if she has really understands what it means, though.

She reminded me of the purity of a child’s experience at a sporting event.  When paying attention to the game (instead of playing games on an iPod during a boring stretch), it’s all so immediate and consuming while I sit there in games like last night’s just feeling the hope for the evening drain and just wait for it to be over. It does not seem like it was almost three years ago when I took her to her second hockey game…Game 2 against the Flyers in April 08 and she screamed her throat raw in both “Let’s go Caps!” and “Flyers Suck!” chants.

It was tough to watch her go through this last night, but this is how children form bonds with their teams. I wasn’t much older than her when my dad took me to Game 1 of the 1979 World Series.  There are four things I remember about that game:

  1. The rain.
  2. Thinking my dad was going to get in a fight when he was pelted in the face with peanuts thrown by a guy a few rows in front of us who would not put down his umbrella and many people around us were tossing peanuts on him.
  3. The Orioles losing that game.
  4. Three dozen parking tickets on his car’s windshield after the game.

But I remember and those memories are indelible.  While I don’t pay a lot of attention to baseball these days, I still keep a small look on the Orioles out of the corner of my eye.  Someday, my daughter will remember this, too, and she will be better for it.

In other news, my six year old daughter apparently got herself engaged to a seven year old Rangers fan sitting in the row behind us in the third period. Yeah. It was that kind of night.

One Line, Two Swedes, No Waiting…Until The Lines Change Again

Image for One Line, Two Swedes, No Waiting…Until The Lines Change Again

The Washington Capitals gave up the first goal again yesterday afternoon, this time to the Ottawa Senators, but they scored the next and final three goals of the game to end their brief three game skid.  The worst moment of the game came when the Senators Milan Milachek cross checked Karl Alzner into the board headfirst from behind and Alzner lay on the ice nearly motionless for a few moments.  There was much relief through Capsland when Alzner continued taking a regular shift through the rest of the game after a brief trip to the dressing room.

I was alo glad to finally be able to capture an image I’ve been waiting for all season…an image of Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson on the ice at the same time.

Hopefully the Capitals are able to keep up their winning ways.  Read more better stuff at Japer’s Rink, Russian Machine, The Peerless, and watch some TV at On Frozen Blog.  See  too many of my photos below or on flickr.

Caps Leave Miller Sprawling

Image for Caps Leave Miller Sprawling

Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller (#30) sprawls to protect his net from Washington Capitals forward David Steckel (#39) and Matt Bradley (#10) during their NHL ice hockey game at Verizon Center although both Capitals would score later in the game

The Washington Capitals left last year’s Vezina Trophy winning goalie Ryan Miller sprawling last night getting three past him from Nicklas Backstrom, Matt Bradley and David Steckel. Alex Semin added an empty netter to seal the win at 4-2. Coach Bruce Boudreau mixed up the lines last night putting Backstrom on the second line centering Semin and Laich while moving up rookie Marcus Johansson to center the first line with Alex Ovechkin.  I thought there was a lot to like about these lines aside from the fact that Ovechkin continues to be mired in…something.  Despite the fact that the Capitals seem to be *gasp* making do without Ovechkin hitting the scoresheet in a meaningful way, am I alone in wanting some more Ovitine about now, please?

Anyway, you know the deal, not much worth reading here, just photos below and on flickr. If you want to read, check out Japer’s Rink, Russian Machine Never Breaks, the Peerless and all the rest of the Capitals based blogs.
